2015 — Amazon Inc. Resume AI screening tool
Automation and AI has been key to Amazon’s e-commerce dominance, so they tried to apply the same principles to build an AI hiring tools that automatically screened hunderds of peoples resumee, automatically selected the best 5 and hire them.
Fantastic, only in theory.
By the 2015 they realized that the program was making its hiring decision, for technical and software josb, in a sexist and discriminatory way against women.
Quoting the Reuters : That is because Amazon’s computer models were trained to vet applicants by observing patterns in resumes submitted to the company over a 10-year period. Most came from men, a reflection of male dominance across the tech industry.
Amazon said that the tool was never used and that it was nonfunctional for several reasons.
I personally believe that Developers, Data scientists and all the people involved in the AI field have a huge responsibility to create a system that follows and respects those values: Fairness, Reliability, Safety, Privacy, Security, Inclusiveness, Transparency and Accountability.
